Discuss technology (U24: P2, M1)
Convergence is when two or more things come together to form a new whole
Today technological convergence is necessary when a production company is working on a new project's pre production, production and post production.
Preproduction
During a project's pre production, a production company could use technology such as long distance face calls to determine key factors of the project such as its director, cast members and budget without having to physically be with one another. This saves time and money as it ensures that people wouldn't have to use the production company's money on flights. This is especially useful as it can ensure that all of the communications aspects of the project could be done on everyone's individual phone.
Computers would most likely be used when writing scripts for the project usually with the software Final Draft as it would be industry standard with most production companies. This is because if the writer chose to typewrite it or write the script by hand, there would be a much higher probability that said script would get lost meaning that all the work would have been for nothing. As well as this, if written on a computer, the script would most likely be backed up on a home drive saving it in case the computer was out of the writer's hands for whatever reason. Being written on a computer would also mean that the script would be easy to print ensuring that its distribution to the cast and crew would be streamlined. This is especially useful for low budget films as writing the script on the computer can ensure that the preproduction and postproduction could all be done on one machine.
When making the budget for a project a production company would usually use a budgeting application to keep track of their finances during the making of the film and to ensure that all money is used accordingly. The applications such as Mint are a necessity because they save money that would otherwise go to an accountant and they ensure that all people in charge of the project's finance could see how the money is being spent simultaneously rather than it all just being in a book or a piece of paper that would need to be physically shared. This is especially useful for low budget films as policing the budget on the computer can ensure that all of the accounting for finances could all be done on one machine.
Production
During a project's production, the filming crew could use cloud technology such with softwares such as WeTransfer and Google Drive to save key footage to computers off of the film site. This ensures that no footage is lost from situations such as travelling and it means that members of the production team who see it at their office could determine if its usable and if the production teams would need to reshoot. This is especially useful as it can ensure that all of the media aspects of the film (audio, film, images, music etc) could be found on one cloud drive.
During the production of a project, if the crew didn't have a certain prop that was necessary for the filming, they could order the material(s) needed to make said prop from Amazon meaning it could arrive potentially the same day. This would ensure that the production company wouldn't lose many (if any) precious hours of filming. This is very useful as the necessary purchases could already be documented in the project's budget automatically without someone having to do it manually potentially causing an error.
By using technologies such as modern cameras, low budget films can now record audio all on one device rather than having to invest in technologies such as professional microphones. Modern cameras can also potentially automatically upload to a cloud ensuring that a person wouldn't have to potentially lose any footage through a possible error. Modern cameras are extremely useful, especially for low budget films, as it possible to buy one for relatively cheap that can still record in high resolution whilst being very portable because people shooting low budget phones may not know how to transport. Mobile phones, when being used for a short film, could also potentially be used to market the project. By using hashtags on social medias and making QR codes, people making short low budget films on their smart phones could potentially use one device for the preproduction, production and post production of one project.
Postproduction
During a project's post production, the editing team would most likely use a computer software such as Final Cut Pro X unless the film was shot in 70mm film in which case it would be physically cut. The editing team would use editing software because it would mean that they wouldn't necessarily have to sacrifice the footage they had cut and it would mean that other members of the editing team could work on it when not present. This is extremely useful, especially for a low budget film, because it could ensure that all editing and writing aspects of a film could be done on one device.
The editing team could also use CGI software such as Autodesk 3DS Max to add new layers to the film that couldn't necessarily be used during the production of the film. This would most likely be edited into the project on a computer as it would streamline the production of the CGI and because it would allow multiple people to work on the CGI at the same time as it could potentially be very difficult to render (such as in The Matrix). The CGI is normally done when editing the film meaning that both can be done on the same device.
The editing of the film usually consists of sound editing which can manipulate where sound would come from different speakers when someone was watching a film which can be extremely useful when editing a film meant to be shown in a movie theatre. This is a large improvement from when sound editing didn't exist in older films and the same sound would come from the speakers in the theatre. Sound editing is extremely useful as it can ensure that all editing of the film can be done on one device.

If a production company wanted to make an advertisement by a certain date in order to take advantage of a certain season such as releasing a summer themed advertisement at the beginning of the June or releasing a Christmas themed advertisement at the beginning of December, they would most likely use a Gantt chart. Recently, the advertising industry has taken advantage in the large increase of technology that most people in the industry have by using a software called Monday.com. This, similarly to a Gantt chart allows the user to see which tasks need to be done and what has already been accomplished. Unlike Gantt charts, this software can be used by multiple people regardless of location and can have live updates of what tasks have been done decreasing the amount of confusion that different people in a production team may have stopping the potential of the same task being done twice instead of focusing on a task that has not been done yet.
By increasing the way multiple people around the world can communicate now either via email or social media resulting in the exact same message being put across without having to see each other in person or syncing up schedules to make phone calls, both time and money are being saved for the production company. Because of this increased quality of communication between people, the advertising industry has utilised developments in technologies regarding marketing because now, because of the developments in technologies, people involved in a production's marketing can now discuss vital information about the project with one another any place any time meaning the production's schedule is better made potentially increasing the quality of the advertisement.
Because of the increase of Monday.com, it has now become the industry standard for production companies instead of the former large use of Gantt charts. This would largely be due to the fact that the software is encrypted meaning that only people part of the production team could access and therefore edit what needs to be done. This is extremely important in the highly publicised and competitive media industry where huge amounts of fans and hackers would take pleasure in finding out a production company's tasks for a project and leak it onto the internet. Because of Monday.com, production companies can feel reassurance in the fact that said scenario would most likely not be able to happen.
Because of the increased developments in technologies, production companies are now using Monday.com as their main way of planning and carrying out production schedules. The software allows heads of the project and different members of the production team to have a hands on approach of what's happening and to get a full understanding of how far along said production is from its completion

When marketing the project, the studio would most likely include hashtags with all of their modes of advertising; trailers, posters. This way, when people use the hashtag on social medias such as Twitter and Instagram, not only would the studio be able to tell the reach of how successful their marketing of the project was based on the amount of times the hashtag was used, but could successfully interpret the response to their campaign judging by the positivity of the messages included with the hashtags. This can be done by using analytic tools such as Mention.com in which the production team can find the overall positivity of the messages as well as similar data for the studios' competitors.
